A parti poodle has a white base coat with distinct darker spots, patches or saddling. A poodle with white feet and a white chest is not a parti, nor is a poodle with cream or apricot shading on the ears or along the back. The preferred look for a parti poodle is an even distribution of spots on a white base coat, with a white muzzle and white blaze centered up the forehead. The color should be clear and well-defined. The pigment should be consistant with the coat coloration; black pigment for all colors except chocolate partis, which will have liver pigment. In the rare instance of a blue parti, the pigment may be steel grey. Not all partis are black and white, but this is the most popular color pattern.

Anton (white and black), Eldon (white and apricot), Gracie (white and black), and Meagan (white and red) are parti poodles. Timber (Gracie's dad), whose mother is silver parti (Scooter), has sired many parti puppies. Parti poodles are registered through AKC, CKC, and UKC. The price for a nicely marked parti puppy is often higher than for a solid colored puppy of similar structural quality. There are no genetic faults associated with parti markings, other than what would be considered normal for solid colored poodles of the same size.

When looking to purchase a parti poodle, it is important to consider the structural integrity of the puppy before the marking pattern. You want a solid, healthy puppy, regardless of its color. Some breeders breed primarily for color, and pay little attention to other physical attributes.

It is not uncommon for a parti puppy to be born with a pink nose. As the puppy matures, black spots will appear until eventually the nose is completely black.
